Thistledown was painted to show the autumn colors of the California thistle, which grows all over the West. I took a few of these large plants into my studio to work from home. One day, as the painting was nearing completion, I watched a kestrel fly from thistle to thistle feeding on insects outside my studio window. At that point I decided he would be a natural choice of subjects for this painting.
