When the salmon are spawning in the summer months in Alaska, the brown bears have an easy time feeding. Prior to the salmon run, the bears feed on berries and small mammals. The salmon give the bears a chance to put on a lot of weight and body fat to help them through the months when food is scarce.

The easiest fishing spots for the bears are where the fish have to move upstream over rapids or "bad water."
