The largest, most majestic of the falcons, the gyrfalcon is found from the northern United States to the arctic. The color of its plumage ranges from white to black. The gyrfalcon competes with the peregrine falcon for both territory and food; the ptarmigan is their main food source.

This grey-phased gyrfalcon is on watch along the coast where it may find gulls and waterfowl and, possibly, shorebirds.
