I have always felt a kinship with the polar bear, for reasons I'm sure I understand. Maybe it's my Viking and Native American heritage; maybe it's the loneliness. Painting is a solitary pursuit. Most of it is done in my own mind, and these feelings can't be shared until the work is completed. I try to show the bear's strength, his isolation and his courage.
